We have arrived in Vietnam and find it to be a rather splendid cultural experience. The drive from the airport was our first picture of the country, which was varied to say the least. We saw everything out of our window from scenic rice paddies, to shacks, to Canon manufacturing plants. At times it was a postcard to be taken, while at other times it easily shocked our western sensibilities.
We have already had the chance to see many amazing things, and learn a great deal about the culture. We cannot take pictures fast enough. The traffic is the craziest thing to get used to. Laws are non-existent; when crossing the street one has to blindly jump into traffic trusting the scooters and taxis to go around. The key is keeping a steady pace, not running, not stopping, and not looking too closely at all the drivers bearing down at a speedy clip.
We were able to visit a Buddhist temple, a government cemetery, the Old Quarter (which is the tourist part of town), along with many good restaurants. and, of course, lots of people-watching. We have already had too many experiences to properly note, but wanted to post something so those of you checking would be able to get a small glimpse of what we are living.
